Welcome to Black and White Pets, this is a hub dedicated to the care and wellbeing of animals of all varieties. I myself keep lots of pets and have learnt much about others through education and work.

This hub will feature videos, guides, care sheets and pictures of many animals, including tortoises, turtles, rabbits, hamsters, some bird species and many reptile species commonly kept. Much of my information has come from practical experience and knowledge shared with me by others and the opinions of authors in many reference texts.

My current pets include the following:

  • George and Daisy the Juvenile Cherryhead Redfoot Tortoises
  • Moo the 14wk old Dwarf Lop Rabbit
  • Henrietta the year old Winter White Hamster
  • Gumpy the 4 year old Leopard Gecko
  • Bert the 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier

Starting with the tortoises I shall go into their setups and how I take care of them. They are kept in a tortoise table, I did keep them in a Vivarium as that is generally advised as people consider humidity to be less of an issue for tropical species when in an enclosed environment but I have found that Tortoise Life (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ProRep-Reptile-Tortoise-Life-Substrate/dp/B002UE14JA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327674426&sr=8-1) with Sphagnum moss enables me to keep the humidity to around 70% with spraying twice daily. They love their greens, their favourite being Kale and favourite fruit being strawberrys. They are my favourite pet and have bags of character.

My Leopard Gecko is kept in a vivarium (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vivexotic-LX24-Walnut-Reptile-Vivarium/dp/B0035V15CS/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1327674823&sr=1-2), they are amazing, I originally had him in an exo terra 45 x 45 x 45 but I decided to change as I heard such great things about the vivariums. He is kept on sand, unusual as most keep them on paper but I've never had problems with it in terms of ingestion by Gumpy. He is heated by a heat mat and a 60W bulb and the whole tank stays to around 30oC with a cooler end away from his hide.

Moo is kept in a Nero 3 indoor rabbit cage and is fed on Blueberry Warren Rabbit Mix, she is very lovely and very little being a dwarf rabbit and usually has the run of the room!

Henrietta is a rescue hamster from some of my friends, she was not being looked after properly so we took her in and she has the best time all day! She has changed colour and got very strong from constantly running on her wheel but is excrutiatingly cute!

I will be posting up Care sheets daily for each of my animals and then afterwards for animals I have cared for previously. Starting with the Tortoises, then Gumpy the Gecko, then Moo the Rabbit and Henrietta the Hamster.

I'm still having trouble working out the amazon ads function, none of the products are found on the amazon associated page even though I can find them on amazon, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, I'll be adding more later today hopefully, starting with some redfoot tortoise care sheets. They will be of my own making and stuff borrowed from other keepers I have spoken to so should be quite extensive!
